The Drift was created to allow humanity to combat the Kaiju, colossal sea monsters that emerged from an interdimensional portal called the Breach. Each Jaeger is controlled by two co-pilots whose minds are joined by this mental link. The Drift shares the mental stress of piloting the machine between the two pilots. In 2020, brothers Yancy and Raleigh Becket piloted the Jaeger Gipsy Danger. When a Kaiju killed Yancy, Raleigh managed to kill the Kaiju but was traumatized by his brother's death and the stress of solo-piloting the Jaeger, causing him to quit the program. Years later, Raleigh searched for a new co-pilot and found Mako Mori was compatible. During their first test in Gipsy Danger, Mako lost alignment while recalling a Kaiju attack in Tokyo that almost killed her, nearly discharging Gipsy's plasma cannon inside the Shatterdome. This caused Marshal Stacker Pentecost to suspend Mako. Raleigh protested, having seen through Mako's memories that Pentecost had adopted and raised Mako after her parents died in a Kaiju attack. Later, disregarding Pentecost's orders, Newton Geiszler drifted with a Kaiju's brain, learning that they are a hive mind of bioweapons created by an alien race. Newton and Hermann Gottlieb later drifted with an infant Kaiju's brain, discovering that the Breach only opens if it detects Kaiju DNA.
